After a series of less-than-stellar gel pen experiences, I decided to invest in the Leuchtturm1917 Drehgriffel gel pen, and I’m glad I did. As someone who appreciates the smooth flow of fountain pens and the precise lines of Micron drawing pens, I’ve always struggled to find a gel pen that truly satisfied me. Previous attempts, including a set from Temu, proved disappointing due to their short lifespan and flimsy construction.
The Drehgriffel, however, feels like a significant upgrade. The hexagonal aluminum barrel and brass tip give it a substantial, high-quality feel. The twist mechanism for extending the nib is smooth and reliable. While the pen initially felt short (at 13cm), I realized this was likely due to the absence of a cap, a factor I’m curious if others experience.
The writing experience is excellent. The gel ink flows effortlessly onto the paper, providing a smooth and consistent line. It’s a welcome change from the scratchiness often associated with ballpoint pens.
A major plus is the refill compatibility. Leuchtturm1917 Drehgriffel refills are readily available, but I discovered that Parker G2 refills also fit, offering a potentially more economical option. At around £4.50 for Leuchtturm1917 refills, and even less for Parker G2 refills, this makes the pen a great long-term investment.
The design is another highlight. The vintage aesthetic, with its unique color palette and brass accents, is both stylish and functional. The pen’s £22.50 (at the time of writing) price point is reasonable for its quality and performance, and the wide range of available colors makes it tempting to purchase more.
